Wizz Air Opens Base in Podgorica, Launches 17 New Routes
Wizz Air will open a new base at Podgorica Airport on March 30, significantly expanding its presence in the country and improving Montenegro's air connectivity.
The airline will station two Airbus A321neo aircraft and launch 17 new routes to major European cities, including Paris, Rome, Barcelona, Bratislava, Hamburg, and more.
This expansion brings an additional 1 million seats annually, making travel easier for residents while boosting incoming tourism.
Wizz Air Hungary CEO Roland Tischner stated:
"This month marks an important milestone not only for Wizz Air, but also for Montenegro. I am proud to announce the opening of a new base in Podgorica, making it the 37th base in our network and further strengthening connections with the rest of Europe."
From Airports of Montenegro, CEO Roko Tolić highlighted both opportunities and challenges:
"Seventeen new routes with one partner is a result that usually takes years. Although we operate with limited capacity and passenger comfort may be reduced, safety remains at the highest level. Podgorica Airport is ready for near all-day operations, including late-night and early-morning flights."
Economic Impact
The opening of the base is expected to bring:
- ~80 direct jobs
- ~700 indirect jobs in tourism and related industries
Wizz Air has been operating in Montenegro since 2016, carrying nearly 2 million passengers so far. With this new base, the company further strengthens its position in the region.
The move is part of Wizz Air's broader growth strategy. In 2025, the airline:
- Added 42 aircraft
- Launched 320+ routes
- Transported 68.6 million passengers
In 2026, the company aims to exceed 80 million passengers globally.
